Assessment done with you, not to you

Most psychological testing is done to you: questions asked, tests given, results announced. Therapeutic Assessment is done with you — and for the right person at the right moment, the assessment itself becomes the intervention.

What it is

It starts with your questions, not a referral form

Therapeutic Assessment is a collaborative model developed by psychologist Stephen Finn. Instead of a referral question, we start with your questions — the ones you'd actually like your life to answer. "Why do I keep ending up in the same place?" "Why is everything so much harder for my son than for other kids?"

Testing then becomes a way of exploring those questions together. We look at results as they emerge, test out new understandings in the room, and finish not with a verdict but with answers you helped build. Adults receive a personal letter written to their questions. Children often receive their findings as a story written just for them.

People change more readily when they feel understood than when they're simply told what's wrong.

— The premise behind Therapeutic Assessment

Why it's different

Three things set it apart

Direction

Your questions drive it

The evaluation is organized around what you genuinely want to know, not just what a referral form asks.

Discovery

We look together

Results aren't withheld until the end. Discoveries happen in session, where they can be examined, challenged, and made sense of.

Change

The ending is a beginning

The final session and the letter are built to change something — how you understand yourself, how a family understands a child — not just to document it.

Who it's for

It earns its keep in particular moments

When therapy is stuck — you've done good work, and you keep hitting the same wall anyway. When the stakes of self-understanding are high — a life pattern that keeps repeating, a family locked in the same fight. When previous evaluations answered the referral question but never answered your question. And for families, when a child has become "the problem" and everyone needs a new story to work from.

How it runs

Two ways to do it

Full Therapeutic Assessment
The complete Finn model · private pay · one flat fee
  • Collaborative question-setting, from the first session
  • Testing woven with in-session exploration
  • An assessment intervention session — the signature of the model
  • Extended collaborative sessions and a personalized therapeutic letter
  • Delivered across several weeks
The hybrid option
Insurance carries the testing spine · you purchase the collaborative layer
  • The testing and diagnostic work runs through your insurance at its contracted rates
  • You privately purchase the collaborative layer: the assessment intervention session, the extended collaborative sessions, and the personalized letter
  • One honest note: the hybrid makes financial sense when your plan has solid testing benefits — I'll help you check that before you choose

Both paths are priced plainly on the Fees page, and both involve a written agreement up front so nothing about the arrangement is a surprise.

Here's what Therapeutic Assessment is not: it's not the "good version." Every evaluation I do is collaborative in spirit, complete on its own, and ends with a real feedback conversation and a usable report — nothing essential is held back for a higher tier. Therapeutic Assessment is that same stance taken to full depth: more time, more exploration, more of the work happening together. It's a different product for a different need — depth, not speed, and not access.

Therapeutic Assessment is uncommon enough that people travel for it — from Alamance and Caswell counties, from the Greensboro area, and from as far west as Yadkin County.

Does one of those moments sound like yours?

Reach out and say so — we'll talk through whether the full model fits, or whether a standard evaluation answers your question just as well.
